When I told my sister Regina, a graphic designer, that I was using The Gimp image manipulation software for doing pseudo graphic design stuff, she thought it was pretty funny.
She uses Adobe Photoshop, I think, and had never heard of The Gimp. Apparently Wilber, the Gimp's mascot (the beret-wearing squirrel/fox with the paintbrush in his mouth), didn't inspire her with confidence that this software could produce professional results.
But then she tried it, and she had to admit that it worked a lot like Adobe Photoshop. She said it wasn't as advanced and didn't have as many features as Photoshop, but you can do the basics, such as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. (I created the eSoup banner you see at the top of this blog using The Gimp.)
One thing The Gimp does not have that Adobe Photoshop does is a $600 price tag! It's a free download! You can't beat that!
